Kasaragod
district was formed on 24th May, 1984 (As per GO.(MS)No.520/84/RD
dated 19.05.1984) as the northern
most district of Kerala, The
name Kasaragod, is said to be derived from the word Kusirakood
meaning Nuxvomica forests (Kanjirakuttom).
Kasaragod is world renowned for its coir and handloom industries.
Fishing is a prime source of livelihood. Kasaragod as known
as the land of gods, forts, rivers, hills and beautiful beaches.
The fort at Bekal is the largest and best preserved in the State.
Kasaragod
displays a variety of styles in temple architecture - the unique
style of the Madhur Mahaganapathy temple, the typical Kerala
style of the historic Malik Deenar Great Juma Masjid and so
on speak volumes about the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Spectacular pageants of Theyyam, Yakshagana, Kumbla (buffalo
race), Poorakkali, Kolkali etc. enchant visitors.
There are
12 rivers in this district. The longest is Chandragiri (105
kms) Kariankod (64 kms) is the second., Shiriya (61 kms), Uppala
(50 kms), Mogral (34 kms), Chithari (25 kms), Nileshwar (47
kms), Kavvayi (23 kms), Manjeshwar (16 kms), Kumbla (11 kms),
Bekal (11 kms) and Kalanad (8 kms) are the other rivers. |
